Saddle Stitched Journals with Dorkys Ramos

In this workshop, students will create their own blank mixed-media journals using saddle-stitched bookbinding techniques. They will select from a variety of papers, including watercolor, vellum, textured paper, and more to create a personalized notebook/TN insert in which they can explore their creativity. Patterned paper can provide the perfect color palette. Textured paper can provide unexpected elements to incorporate into your spreads. Staring at a blank page can be daunting, but starting with a beautiful canvas can help spark ideas! At the end of the 1 ½ -hour workshop, students will know how to use bookbinding tools, how to do a saddle stitch, make deckled edges, and take home a unique journal for mixed-media art journaling. All materials will be provided.

Dorkys Ramos is a NYC writer, artist, and teacher with a lifelong passion for all things stationery. Writing and art have always been a huge part of Dorkys' creativity with the latter passion leading her to explore watercolors, gouache, bookbinding, brush lettering, calligraphy, and developing a line of hand-illustrated stationery. Through her various art workshops, Dorkys has taught kids as young as two and adults as old as 104! And with her YouTube channel, she continues to reach other stationery lovers around the world.

After studying architecture at the New York Institute of Technology, Dorkys pursued a master's degree in journalism at Syracuse University. Her work has appeared in a variety of publications, including Travel + Leisure, Time Out New York, Stationery Trends, and Bon Appétit. She currently serves as the program director for Uptown Stories, a Manhattan-based nonprofit that teaches creative writing workshops for kids in her community. To her, the pursuit of learning something new is just as, if not more, thrilling as the finished piece.
